The people behind the scenes

Captain Jock Veenstra has spent most of his childhood years and all of his adult life in Goolwa, near the mouth of the Murray River, and grew up working on boats in his father’s tourist cruise business. A fully qualified river captain, skilled boat builder and tourism entrepreneur, Jock has a vast knowledge of the Murray River and the Coorong.
Spirit of the Coorong Cruises’ captains and crew are all locals with a wide knowledge of the environment in which the cruises operate. With a total of more than 100 years accumulated Coorong and Murray River cruising experience there is not much our captains do not know about this river system.
Both boat crew and office staff at Spirit of the Coorong are knowledgeable, relaxed, friendly and efficient. Job satisfaction is a feature of their work – they love helping visitors to enjoy their holiday in the Goolwa and Coorong area. After all, there aren’t too many other jobs that let you show people a spectacular area of pristine wetland wilderness that you just know they will enjoy!

TripAdvisor Reviews

5 star ratingFantastic family experience Although we were worried that the 6hr coorong Adventure cruise would be too long for our 9 and 7 year olds we decided to give it a go and we are SO glad we did. The cruise was absolutely lovely, amazing scenery, very informative commentary and a delicious lunch all in very comfortable surrounds. We all learnt so much about the ecology, birdlife and history of the area which added so much to the experience. Matt's commentary on the birdlife really struck a chord with our girls and on a return trip to the Murray mouth they took great delight in pointing out the tiny migratory birds from Siberia to their cousins. My highlight?? The delicious cockles cooked up there on the shore. We gad a great time a few days later cooking up a New Year's Eve feast of cockles collected from Goolwa and trying to replicate Matt's recipe (with great success!) I will never see Cockles just as bait ever again! Fabulous trip and we highly recommend it.

5 star ratingCoorong Discovery tour how awesome Have wanted to visit the Coorong for many years and now it is done - maybe needs another visit. The Spirit of Coorong cruises folk were fantastic. Easy to book, the cruise itself was extremely well organised, the crew were knowledgeable and informative and great boat drivers ! Most interesting and best value for money tour we have undertaken for a long time.

5 star ratingSpirit of the Coorong Cruise - 18/06/17 Departing at 10.00am my wife and I along with 13 other passengers began our cruise. Daniel, our Captain and Dave our crew member. made sure we were welcome and comfortable, either in the cabin or on on the upper deck. Daniel's brief explanation of what we were to experience helped us know this was going to be something different as far as a cruise is concerned. Morning Tea, a very tasty Lunch and afternoon tea was served as part of the cost. There were two excursions walking over sand dunes, one to view the Southern Ocean and the second to be given a bit of the history of our First Indigenous People as well as some special sights and including finding fresh water in the the sand.

Keen photographers have many opportunities for taking photos of the myriad of bird life (which Daniel can virtually name all) and many seals. The cruise in its entirety is 6 hours.

Booking is made easy by internet and all staff are very friendly. If you are visiting South Australia and have a couple of days a visit to Victor Harbour/Goolwa is well worth your while.
