The people behind the scenes

Captain Jock Veenstra has spent most of his childhood years and all of his adult life in Goolwa, near the mouth of the Murray River, and grew up working on boats in his father’s tourist cruise business. A fully qualified river captain, skilled boat builder and tourism entrepreneur, Jock has a vast knowledge of the Murray River and the Coorong.
Spirit of the Coorong Cruises’ captains and crew are all locals with a wide knowledge of the environment in which the cruises operate. With a total of more than 100 years accumulated Coorong and Murray River cruising experience there is not much our captains do not know about this river system.
Both boat crew and office staff at Spirit of the Coorong are knowledgeable, relaxed, friendly and efficient. Job satisfaction is a feature of their work – they love helping visitors to enjoy their holiday in the Goolwa and Coorong area. After all, there aren’t too many other jobs that let you show people a spectacular area of pristine wetland wilderness that you just know they will enjoy!

5 star ratingMy mum said it knocked spots off spots I went with family aged 44-70 and everyone enjoyed it. There were also some kids on board who had a great time. You do need to enjoy scenery and birds to get the most out of the day. The sand dunes are amazing - huge and ever shifting, quite surreal.

If you have limited mobility you would not be able to do the walks. I can imagine this would be really hot mid summer, but on a warm autumn day it was lovely. Lunch was fine, but the mid morning feed of cockles was a major hit with many! Cooked up on a barbie on the beach and served out after a walk. Quite special.

5 star ratingHard to fault this cruise along The Coorong There is very little to add to the comments already made, we saw just an incredible number of birds and seals. We were so well looked after the lunch was excellent and there was plenty of it. I would highly recommend this trip.

5 star ratingExcellent cruise experience. Fantastic cruise in a very comfortable boat, with interesting, knowledgeable crew. The Coorong scenery is superb, the wildlife photography opportunities are fantastic. All this, with a tasty lunch, then afternoon tea. Thanks to Matt & Richard, it was a most enjoyable way of showcasing some of the treasures of our State to visiting Kiwi friends! Highly recommended.
